Sordid and Sacred:  The Beggars in Rembrandt’s Etchings

January 26 --  March 20, 2009

Hedley Gallery

Featuring 35 selections from the John Villarino Collection of rare etchings by Rembrandt Van Rijn (1606-1669), and highly regarded as some of the richest and detailed etchings in art. These works are noteworthy for their originality and imagination.  Rembrandt frequently chose beggars as the subjects for his etchings, portraying them as biblical figures, “a crossover between street life and sacred history [which] matches a pattern that is found elsewhere in Rembrandt’s work.”  The exhibition was curated by Michael Schwartz for Landau Traveling Exhibitions of Los Angeles, CA.
